This Maunalani Heights home hadn’t had significant updates since its original construction in the mid-1960s. The homeowner originally bought the house for its spectacular views—something that we also fell in love with when we first saw it! We knew we had to find a better way to take advantage of the incredible Oahu views, since it originally had only obstructed, one-directional views from the bedrooms at the front of the house. We also wanted to make the space much more functional for the homeowner’s life. He loves entertaining, and we wanted to give him a space that allowed him to have plenty of loved ones around without feeling cramped.

We ended up doing a major home remodel to carry out our open-concept vision for the space. We started by converting two of the bedrooms into one large kitchen, taking full advantage of the gorgeous, unobstructed view at the front of the house. We then converted what was originally the kitchen into a much more spacious master bathroom. In addition, we opened up the previously enclosed stairwell and knocked down unnecessary walls to ensure beautiful views from every possible angle. To make sure the homeowner had plenty of space to entertain, we also created an all-new outdoor lanai for additional seating.

For the kitchen remodel, we installed countertops in a beautiful 3cm granite. We included a chiseled edge on the countertop—which you can only achieve with thicker granite slabs—to give the kitchen a more natural, traditional look and feel. We also created plenty of organizational elements within the kitchen to allow for better storage and additional room for prep and entertaining. For example, we included a unique microwave drawer to hide the appliance and leave room on the counters for more prep space. One of our favorite organizational elements that we installed were the corner pull-out drawers. This distinctive design element is not only a unique statement piece, but also maximizes back corner space, making it much more accessible for storage.

As for appliances, we teamed up with Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery to select the best, top-of-the-line products, including a wine fridge and professional-grade baking oven. As a final touch, we restored the hardwood floors throughout the home to their original glory, finishing off one of our favorite Hawaii home remodels to date.
